FAQS
Yes. Most surface scratches, paint scuffs and small gouges can be repaired at home using the correct preparation, primer, colour coat and clear coat. If the bumper is cracked, badly distorted or damaged around parking sensors or mounting points, seek professional advice before starting.
A typical bumper restoration requires:
- Cleaner and degreaser
- Cloth
- Sandpaper in suitable grades
- Putty filler for deeper scratches
- Epoxy Primer/Plastic Primer
- Colour-matched base coat (Tintatek)
- Clear top coat
The exact products depend on whether the damage is limited to the clear coat, has reached the colour layer or has exposed the bare plastic.
For not too deep scratches, begin with a suitable medium-grade abrasive (g240/g320) to smooth scratches. After the primer has dried, use fine wet-and-dry paper (g600) to create a smooth surface for the colour coat. Avoid using very coarse paper unnecessarily, as it can leave deep sanding marks in the plastic.
Yes, particularly where bare plastic or filler is exposed. Bare plastic normally requires a compatible adhesion promoter followed by primer. This helps the paint bond correctly, creates an even surface and reduces the risk of peeling, cracking or an uneven finish.
Use your vehicle's paint code rather than choosing a colour by eye. Depending on the manufacturer, the code may be found inside a door shut, under the bonnet, in the boot or in the vehicle handbook.
Remember that age, sunlight and previous repairs can cause the existing paint to differ slightly from the original factory colour. Use our Tintatek products to match the current vehicle colour for any fading or colour shifts. After getting the ratio for your vehicle's factory colour, adjust by eye based on the real colour on your vehicle.
Yes, if you are using a base-coat colour system. The clear coat provides gloss, depth and protection against weather, UV exposure and everyday wear. Apply it within the recommended recoat window after the colour coat has flashed off. If using a 2K aerosol clear coat, always follow the product’s safety instructions and use the specified respiratory and protective equipment.
